Alex. Brown Realty Supports Baltimore-area Kids Through the Holidays and Beyond
Five years ago, Alex. Brown Realty partnered with Business Volunteers Unlimited for the first time to find a meaningful, team-based project for its employees. A great match was made with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which collects, organizes, and distributes thousands of gifts to area children in need during the holidays. The program is run through the Salvation Army’s huge warehouse in Hampden, and hundreds of volunteers work during the month of December to make sure all the gifts get into the right box for each child. However, before any of that can happen, rows of tables and boxes need to be set up throughout the entire warehouse space.
In 2005, a team of Alex. Brown employees went to the warehouse on a November day to complete this important task, and they had such a great experience, that they’ve made it an annual event! In November, over 20 teammates made the 5th annual trip over to the warehouse to set up tables and boxes for the largest Angel Tree season on record. In 2010, more than 1,800 families and 4,000 children would be served by the program.
“The warehouse is empty when we start,” said Sheila Perrone, Office Administrator at Alex. Brown. “We set up all of the tables, put the boxes together and stack them up, and then put in the bags that will hold the gifts. It’s great working with Peggy Vick [Salvation Army’s Director of Family Services & Volunteer Services] and a few of us also go back to help with distributing the gifts, too!”
Some team members at Alex. Brown are also continuing their service through BVU’s PENCIL Partnership Program, beginning a mentoring program with students at City Springs Elementary School. A group of employees will build long-term relationships with students at the school through monthly lunch-time meetings.
